The Culture of

Niigata

Located along Japan's northern coast, Niigata is a prefecture that holds a special place in the hearts of Japanese people. It boasts a long coastline and some of the heaviest snowfalls in the world, giving it unique cultural and culinary traditions.

Niigata is world-renowned for its exceptional rice, seafood, and sake. In the summer, Niigata’s fireworks festivals serve as an emblem of the vibrant beauty of Japan.

hasegawa

residence

The Premium Dining Experience will be held at the Hasegawa Family residence, a designated National Important Cultural Property. This is the only time the public will be able to enjoy a meal within the house.

Hasegawa is the former home of the village headman from the Edo period. The current main house was built 300 years ago and is said to be the oldest surviving mansion of a wealthy farmer in the region.

From the dining area, you will be able to look out over the expansive Japanese garden and experience what it would be like to live in Edo-era Japan.

gokuraku

temple

Gokurakuji Temple, established in 849, is a temple in the heart of Ojiya city in Niigata Prefecture. The temple was historically a dressmaking school and a ballroom dance school, and is now open to people from all walks of life. The main hall, which was renovated in 2003, is made entirely of cypress wood. The decoration is beautiful in its modesty and simplicity.

firework

viewing area

The Kashiwazaki Sea Fireworks Festival will be watched from a private, front-row viewing area. The viewing area is matsuri (festival) themed, and will combine the comfort of high-end offerings with the electricity of the festival atmosphere.

Niigata’s gastronomical profile is uniquely influenced by the four elements that form the prefecture. As the snow melts each spring, the pure water sinks into the earth, cultivating the best rice in Japan. The currents in the Sea of Japan along Niigata’s coast create ideal conditions for a plethora of sea life. The transition from seaside agricultural fields to highlands to snowy mountain peaks gives Niigata a large variety of fruits and vegetables. When all of these elements are combined, the true gastronomy of Niigata is born.

Meet 2024 Mrs SAKE Japan

tomomi duquette

Sake Mariage Sommelier /

2024 mrs sake japan

Voted “2024 Mrs SAKE Japan,” Duquette has over 10 years of experience in sake brewing and pairing. In addition to hand-selecting a specialty Niigata sake for each course, Duquette is also releasing a new, limited-edition sake specifically for Premium Dining. Her pairing brings you a happiness!

The feel of Niigata sake, known as “tanrei karakuchi,” is said

to have a crisp taste with a pure finish, similar to a firework.

Pouring a Glass of Sake

The depth of the flavors in Niigata sake comes from the environmental attributes that make Niigata special. Pure snowmelt water from Echigo’s mountains creates rice that is unparalleled in taste and texture. The cold conditions of the Niigata valleys are ideal for rice growth and sake production.

Sake's acidic, subtle flavor makes it perfect for pairing with numerous dishes, including vegetables, seafood, and meat. During the premium dining experience, an expert sake sommelier will pair each dish with a sake specifically designed to highlight and enhance the flavor of the dish.

6-HAND PREMIUM DINING

Niigata Cutlery and Craftmanship

The Premium Dining Experience is enhanced with Niigata-made cutlery. “Murakami-kibori-tsuishiu” has been created in Murakami for over 300 years. It uses unique techniques to create delicate carvings on natural wood and lacquer.

Tsubame-sanjo, located northeast of Kashiwazaki, is known as the “town of manufacturing.” The town is responsible for 90% of western cutlery in Japan and some of the most expensive cutlery in the world. Cutlery from Tsubame-Sanjo was even the centerpiece of a Nobel Prize Office Dinner.
