the culture of niigata
Located along Japan's northern coast, Niigata is a prefecture that holds a special place in the hearts of Japanese people. 150 years ago, the prefecture bustled with trade and commerce, supporting the largest population in Japan.
Today, Niigata is located 90 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen, and is still considered a cultural and historical center point of Japan. It boasts a long coastline and some of the heaviest snowfalls in the world, giving it unique cultural and culinary traditions.
In addition to its ski resorts and distinctive onsen towns, Niigata is world-renowned for its exceptional rice, seafood, and sake.

the kingdom of fireworks
Japanese fireworks are exceptional in terms of technology, color, and shape. Yet Niigata stands apart.
Niigata is known as the Kingdom of Fireworks, thanks to its rich history and lively fireworks culture. Fireworks were first created in Niigata to pay homage to shrines throughout the prefecture and to give thanks for successful harvests. The community’s pride in this fireworks culture has allowed them to continue to grow, leading to larger fireworks and more elaborate displays.
Today, Niigata is home to three of the greatest fireworks displays in Japan and launches the largest fireworks in the world, with the highest production of large size 10, size 20, and foot-long shells.

MOUNTAIN
KATAKAI FIREWORKS MATSURI
The Katakai Fireworks Matsuri (Festival) is an annual celebration at Asahara Shrine in Ojiya, Niigata. Fireworks are lovingly created by Fireworks Masters throughout the year to serve as dedications to the shrine. The town of Katakai is the birthplace of the “yonshakudama,” a 800-meter firework that is recognized as the world’s largest firework. Enjoy two days of festivities, including sumo wrestling matches, taiko drum performances, festival stalls, parades, and day and night fireworks.
RIVER
The Nagaoka Fireworks Festival was started in 1946 to mourn the deceased of World War II. The fireworks are displayed on the banks of the Shinano River and feature world-renowned displays that are over 2 kilometers wide. The fireworks are complemented by portable shrines, parades, and toro nagashi (floating paper lanterns).
NAGAOKA FIREWORKS FESTIVAL
SEA
Enjoy the crystal clear beaches of Kashiwazaki each day and the vibrant festival atmosphere each evening. The Kashiwazaki Fireworks are launched over the Sea of Japan, where more than 1,600 awe-inspiring fireworks are set off over the ocean to illuminate the night sky. Fireworks are also launched diagonally, allowing the fireworks to strike the sea in a breathtaking spectacle.
KASHIWAZAKI SEA FIREWORKS FESTIVAL
the gastronomical heart of japan
Niigata’s gastronomical profile is uniquely influenced by the four elements that form the prefecture. As the snow melts each spring, the pure water sinks into the earth, cultivating the best rice in Japan. The currents in the Sea of Japan along Niigata’s coast create ideal conditions for a plethora of sea life. The transition from seaside agricultural fields to highlands to snowy mountain peaks gives Niigata a large variety of fruits and vegetables. When all of these elements are combined, the true gastronomy of Niigata is born.

Stories of Sake
Niigata Prefecture is the heart of sake in Japan. From being the prefecture with the highest number of
breweries to being the
prefecture that consumes
the most sake, it is no
secret that Niigata
is synonymous
with sake.
The feel of Niigata sake, known as “tanrei karakuchi,” is said
to have a crisp taste with a pure finish, similar to a firework.
The depth of the flavors in Niigata sake comes from the environmental attributes that make Niigata special. Pure snowmelt water from Echigo’s mountains creates rice that is unparalleled in taste and texture. The cold conditions of the Niigata valleys are ideal for rice growth and sake production.
Sake's acidic, subtle flavor makes it perfect for pairing with numerous dishes, including vegetables, seafood, and meat. During the premium dining experience, an expert sake sommelier will pair each dish with a sake specifically designed to highlight and enhance the flavor of the dish.
Niigata Cutlery and Craftsmanship
The Premium Dining Experience is enhanced with Niigata-made cutlery. “Murakami-kibori-tsuishiu” has been created in Murakami for over 300 years. It uses unique techniques to create delicate carvings on natural wood and lacquer.
Tsubame-sanjo, located northeast of Nagaoka, is known as the “town of manufacturing.” The town is responsible for 90% of western cutlery in Japan and some of the most expensive cutlery in the world. Cutlery from Tsubame-Sanjo was even the centerpiece of a Nobel Prize Office Dinner.
